Cozy Fall Feels

“Autumn is more the season of the soul than of nature”

-Friedrich Nietzche

Autumn is a time of change and introspection. As the days grow shorter and cooler we begin to slow down affording us the time to look inward. It shows us, with every leaf, that change is beautiful. Every falling leaf serves to remind us that shedding that which no longer serves us will only make room for new growth. Mother Nature is not subtle about this, and yet, for many the meaning behind the season goes unconsidered.

Our Ancestors lives depended on being connected to the Earth and Her seasons. Autumn was a time spent preserving harvests, prepping themselves, the Earth and their pantries for a long, cold Winter. I can’t imagine the stress of being dependent on only what we could grow or gather but the thought appeals to me. I am thankful for the ease with which I live, but I realize also that with this commercialized existence there is a disconnect that occurs. We become disconnected from the Earth, separated from the meaning of Her seasons, forgetful of our Ancestors, and our culture. But, one only needs to remember to reconnect.

As you go about creating them cozy fall feels be mindful of the deeper meaning behind this season. Inject that meaning into all you do and create. Be present and ever aware of the beauty that surrounds you, breathe deeply, and give thanks for all you have and for all of those that have come before you.

Leaves, Garlands, and Pumpkins Oh My!

My Fall Decor totes are primarily filled with fall florals, leaves, garlands, and pumpkins. Although I’ve been known to completely revamp my decor for seasonal decorating, I really love how I have things right now and didn’t want to completely change everything. You can make a huge impact on your space just by swapping Summer florals for Fall ones and adding in some pumpkins. As you sprinkle those leaves and hang garlands remember that garlands have been a part of human celebrations for at least 2,000 years and possibly longer. Garlands are a symbol of unity and continuity and they were a deeply rooted part of Ancient Seasonal Celebrations that endure today.

I put a basket on my door for flowers and the mailman started putting my mail in it. Now, I put garland in my mailbox.
This garland adds so much cozy to my living room and it doesn’t get much easier.
Yes, that is a garland wrapped around a stick. 🙂
A garland woven in between your porch decor really makes everything pop. I added battery powered string lights to the mum and garland that have a glisten setting. OMG, I love it so much!
These falling leaves were made with fishing line, a needle, and knots to hold them in place.

Whether well placed or haphazardly sprinkled Fall leaves can make a huge impact and are easy on the budget. You can also gather real leaves for free.

When you’re decorating with Fall florals, whether it’s with garlands or floral bushes, don’t be afraid to cut them to suit your needs. Sometimes the smallest things make the biggest impact.

Just Add Pumpkins!

Pumpkins are no new kid on the block in North America. The oldest pumpkin seeds were found in Mexico and have been dated between 7000 and 5500 BC. There is evidence that they were being cultivated by Native Americans as early as 7500 BC. They were a staple food for the Native Americans who used them in soups and stews. When the Colonists arrived in North America, they relied on them heavily for nourishment. Early Irish immigrants in North America began using them as Jack o Lanterns in place of turnips to protect from supernatural powers, which was a Celtic tradition and they have grown to be THE symbol for Fall in the United States. As far as I’m concerned, you can never have enough in your Fall decor. Going to get pumpkins in the Fall is such a beloved tradition in my family that I look forward to every year. Each pumpkin, real or fake, has such personality and character that I just want to get them all. Sigh.

Oliver caught a case of the cozies.

Foraging For Fall Decor

Foraging for Fall Decor is a wonderful way to slow down, get out into nature, and enjoy the season. All the little bits that you collect add warm touches of nature to your seasonal decor and it’s ridiculously budget friendly. When you return home with your treasures, look them up. Discover their meaning and usage throughout history. For example, acorns are a symbol of potential, growth, strength, and endurance. In Norse Mythology, Acorns were associated with Thor and placed throughout homes to protect from lightning. They were sacred to the Celts and were considered a symbol of Nature’s power, fertility, and the interconnectedness of life. It was thought that carrying an acorn would bring good luck, abundance, and would offer protection to the carrier. Buckeyes were linked to the animal powers of a Buck Deer offering intuition and protection from negativity. They were thought to bring comfort in stressful times and were a symbol of the connection to Mother Nature’s strength and resilience. They served as a reminder to stay grounded and connected to Nature. Ground Cherries are a popular symbol in Cajun Culture as well as in Japanese Culture. The Japanese use them medicinally, for protection and as an offering to their ancestors during Japan’s Bon Festival. They are also a prominent feature in Japan’s Hozuki-Ichi Festival. Every little thing means something and the more you learn about things, the more they mean. Please remember to always forage responsibly.

Let’s Take It Outside

For me, the same principles I use inside apply to the outside and I’ve already shown you some examples. Leaves, garlands, pumpkins, and florals are still an integral part of the decor. I try to create cozy, warm, inviting spaces for us and our guests to relax in while enjoying the outdoors and this season. It’s a bit more difficult to do this on a budget with the purchase of Fall flowers, pumpkins, and gourds but it can be done.

A great way to extend your budget and the season of your summer plants is to incorporate them into your Fall Decor. This can really add a lot to your porch, patio, and garden. The best part is that they will wither into the best Halloween decor without doing a thing. Although, the addition of some cobwebs is never discouraged. 🙂

Preserved leaves have such beautiful color!
I got these summer planters from Amazon and just add fall florals, also from Amazon.

I hope that you have found some ideas, inspiration and have discovered some ways to feel more connected this Fall season. There is more to come for this season so be sure to come back soon!

Blessed May Your Autumn Be.
